Lucky Fund helps pet owners afford life-saving treatment at MSU

A working farm dog and family pet named Moose inadvertently ate a dose of medicine meant for a cow. Thanks to the Lucky Fund and the care of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s staff, Moose, a beautiful Bernese Mountain dog, is back working on the farm and brightening the days of his human family.

Another dog, Noah, was brought to the MSU Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) after being attacked by other dogs. Noah underwent a month of surgeries and recovery and, now, thanks to the Lucky Fund, he is back home and thriving.

Tiny, an aptly named Yorkshire Terrier, is so small that a blade of grass completely obstructed her airway. The Internal Medicine service at the VMC came to the rescue after Tiny’s owners tapped the Lucky Fund.

The Lucky Fund provides financial assistance to pet owners whose animals have a good chance of recovery but who cannot afford the costs involved. It is one of many projects donors are supporting this Giving Tuesday—a global day of giving taking place on December 3, 2024.

The story behind the Lucky Fund began in 1995 when an 8-month-old German shepherd and collie mix was struck by a car. Picked up by a stranger and without any information on the owner, the dog was brought to MSU where it received care thanks to contributions from the community.

The dog was renamed Lucky, and with more money left over than was needed for his care, the Lucky Fund was born.

Last year, 77 donors supported the fund’s mission by raising $9,060 on Giving Tuesday. Today, the Lucky Fund helps provide care for more than one pet in need every week.

More information about the Lucky Fund and Giving Tuesday can be found online, and gifts can be made through the website.
