She knows Spartans have her back

Generosity helps students thrive and build community at MSU

The unwavering support of Spartans everywhere turns dreams into reality by breaking down barriers for students and fostering a culture of belonging at Michigan State.

The pressure to finance an education, excel in studies, forge lasting friendships and find a true sense of community at college can feel overwhelming. But thanks to Spartan generosity, MSU students, "feel like they are not alone,” says Ariel Downs, a student majoring in sustainable parks, recreation and tourism at MSU.

Ariel is a part of MSU Greenline, the student calling program that connects alumni and donors to the university, where she observes the impact of Spartan generosity. Over the phone and online, donors can support a variety of funds and programs that make a difference for students.

Involvement in campus programs like the Bailey Scholars Program and the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences organization has provided Ariel a strong community that she is grateful for. These programs and many others benefit from the generosity of Spartans who come together to unleash the power of their collective support on giving days throughout the year, including around Black History Month. The support means a lot to students.

“Campus is so big and it’s easy to feel like you have nowhere to turn,” says Ariel. “There are people who don’t even know me, who have my back.”

Now, Ariel has found happiness in her own generosity. “I just wanted to give back and support any way that I can. It's a great feeling to know that your gift really does make a difference.”

Ariel is passionate about helping underprivileged communities and plans to continue making a difference by using her degree to empower those facing challenges through a career in community development or social work.

The generosity of Spartans everywhere continues to inspire Ariel and all Spartan students, helping them on their journeys to become the difference-makers of tomorrow.
