MSU Retirees Support the Spartan Family

Endowed scholarship established by MSU Retirees Association helps children and grandchildren of current and former employees

They may be done officially working on campus, but the members of the MSU Retirees Association (MSURA) haven’t stopped helping to support the next generation of Spartans.

Thanks to the generosity of MSURA members, several students each year—all are the children or grandchildren of MSU retirees or current MSU employees—receive financial support from the MSURA scholarship endowment.

The endowment has grown significantly since it provided its inaugural two awards in 2017. In April 2021, the association set an ambitious goal to raise an additional $60,000 by 2024. As of August 31, 2022, they surpassed that goal with contributions still coming in.

To date, the endowed fund has more than $165,000 invested and will award nearly $8,000 this academic year, while continuing to grow in value for future awards.

The most recent recipients include:

Jillian Dempsey
Jillian Dempsey, a marketing senior from Long Beach, California, whose grandfather, Peter Marabell, was an English professor
Emily Eckhout
Emily Eckhout, a neuroscience and human biology senior from Rochester Hills, whose father, Roger Haut, was a mechanical engineering professor
Ryan Jordan
Ryan Jordan, a music education freshman from Haslett, whose grandmother, Delores Williams, was an extension agent
Adita Mishra
Adita Mishra, an accounting freshman from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, whose father, Ashok Mishra, works in Information Technology

Emily notes: “I like being an MSU student because it pushes me out of my comfort zone to grow both academically and socially. MSU challenges me to be a better student and human being.”

Ryan adds: “I am very thankful to receive this scholarship and I will do my absolute best to make sure it doesn’t go to waste by being the best student I can be.”

More information and the scholarship application can be found on the association’s website.
