Support Michigan Sand Dunes History!
Have you ever wondered how Michigan’s iconic sand dunes formed? Do you know what work goes into managing and regulating them? Michigan State University Press’s author, Professor Alan F. Arbogast dives into the history of the dunes in his forthcoming book. Arbogast is Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography at MSU, and he is well known for his groundbreaking research on the age and formation of coastal sand dunes along Michigan’s Great Lakes.
Michigan’s sand dunes are far more than a popular tourist attraction that boasts Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and numerous great state parks. Professor Arbogast's book aims to expand public understanding of the dunes’ history, geography and overall role in the Great Lakes ecosystem. It is designed to give readers at home or in the classroom the most comprehensive background about Michigan’s sand dunes to date.
Your support will help provide detailed pictures, diagrams and other illustrations of Michigan’s sand dunes.
This book will contain full-color images, including LIDAR maps that reveal the secrets of sand dunes. It will also showcase beautiful illustrations while keeping the book affordable.
Project Budget
Funds will be used to include the following in Professor Arborgast’s new book prior to publication by the MSU Press

Who We Are
Michigan State University Press is the scholarly publishing arm of historic Michigan State University (1855), the nation’s pioneer land-grant university and the prototype for the institutions established under the Morrill Act of 1862. Although a formal Press was not established at MSU until the mid-20th century, scholarly publishing was an important part of the institution’s mission from early on; significant and influential technical publications were regularly issued from the colleges as early as the mid-1870s. Since its founding in 1947, the mission of the Michigan State University Press has been to be a catalyst for positive intellectual, social and technological change through the publication of research and intellectual inquiry, making significant contributions to scholarship in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences.
