Sparty Mascot Endowment Fund

Sparty with the Sparty StatueThe Sparty Mascot Program at Michigan State University is among the premier collegiate mascot programs, routinely garnering recognition and accolades from national media outlets, Spartan fans and rival schools around the country. The program’s ongoing success is due to a legacy of extremely hardworking, dedicated and talented MSU undergraduate students fueled by a passion for the university. These students are forever changed by their time as Sparty, and your support will help ensure that a one-of-a-kind experience remains available to some of the university’s finest students.

Sparty Mascot squad members perform their duties without external recognition. Motivated by their love of MSU, they volunteer their time and dedicate themselves to the program for the majority of their college careers, receiving only athletic gear and travel opportunities in return. The current cost of college and living expenses has made it increasingly difficult for squad members to forego paying jobs in favor of the Sparty experience. While some students choose to work while being part of the program and attending college full-time, the decision often creates a difficult time management dilemma.

The program operates with a small staff that includes six to nine squad members, a full-time director and an assistant who schedules more than 700 events per year. These events occur in nearly every part of the country where Spartans hang their diplomas.

Your Support Will Make a Big Difference

Our greatest need is finding a way to provide a consistent student experience regardless of the revenue generated through appearance fees or supplemented by the MSU Alumni Office, both of which can vary from year to year. Unlike the vast majority of mascot programs around the country, the Sparty Mascot Program is entirely self-funded and not part of MSU’s athletic department. All costs associated with leadership development, costume replacement and maintenance, travel, training and administration are paid from a very limited annual budget.

Project Budget

Sparty and students on campusThe MSU Alumni Office’s long-term vision for the program is to create an unparalleled MSU experience for the students who participate by providing them with:

  • Financial compensation, either through a stipend or scholarship, to increase the pool of students for whom program participation is a viable opportunity.
  • Recognition at graduation, including the opportunity to wear Sparty’s boots at commencement, participation plaques, and an exclusive Sparty class ring.
  • Ongoing engagement with the university and one another through the Sparty Mascot Alumni group.
  • Leadership Development - The program provides the students with opportunities to connect with alumni in their chosen field of study, and opportunities to participate in educational sessions throughout the year
