Master of Public Health Student Support and Professional Development Fund
Send MPH Students to Ghana, a Professional Conference, and Support “Learning by Doing” Opportunities
Spartans in Public Health need your help eliminating health disparities and preventing people from getting sick or injured in the first place – especially our most vulnerable and at-risk communities. Public health professionals help save lives at the root causes of poor health outcomes, where it starts.
MPH students at MSU take part in a practicum experience to influence public health outcomes at the local level, are encouraged to disseminate their work at professional conferences, and have an opportunity to enroll in a life-changing three-week public health program in Ghana.
All of these “learning by doing” opportunities can be costly when you are already struggling to pay for tuition. Many first-generation graduate students or students with household expense necessities can feel like these opportunities are just out of reach.
The costs associated with traveling to places like Ghana or a professional conference are high.
Together, with your help and generosity, we can support the professional development of Spartans in Public Health and ensure they can say yes when the opportunity presents itself.
Will you join us in opening the doors of opportunity for more MSU students?
Your Support Will Empower Leaders of Change
A gift of $500 supports one student scholarship; donations of any amount are welcome! Gifts help to empower and enact change. A few examples of how past scholarship recipients have used scholarship funds include:
- Education abroad experiences in Ghana, where students are improving water safety and helping girls stay in school with a menstrual health and hygiene intervention.
- Professional development support to present at public health conferences in Michigan and the American Public Health Association national conference.
- Tavel expenses for distant practicum experiences where students lead education and training in rural communities and local health departments.
Project Budget
Students fund 100% of their own expenses, which is why your gift is monumental to their learning experience. The money will be specifically used to offset travel costs, various hands-on professional development experiences that influence policy and health outcomes, and other high costs of pursuing a graduate degree.
Your donation is the difference between whether or not a student accepts an invitation to present at a conference or is able to travel abroad with their classmates to build safe water resources at a school. Your support will help a student represent Michigan State University in public health spaces, in local communities, and abroad.
Our overall fundraising goal is to meet or surpass $3,000 and support six MPH students to represent Michigan State University, demonstrating the values of this great institution.
You can Inspire Spartans in Public Health by Making an Immediate Difference.
Focusing on population health from its home base – the College of Human Medicine’s Flint campus, the Master of Public Health Program is part of the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health. With the first students enrolling in the MPH program in 2008, MSU was a leader in online education. Since those early days, the program has grown to over 120 current students and 800 alumni.
In fall of 2024, MSU added two new concentrations to the MPH program. Academic programs now include the Master of Public Health Generalist, Master of Public Health in Rural Public Health, a Master of Public Health in Public Health Data Management and Analytics, and a Graduate Certificate in the core disciplines of public health.
Spartans work side-by-side with community partners and health care providers in a community-identified and community-participatory public health focus model.
