Pathway Programs Essential Needs Pantry: Supporting Persistence, Academic Community and Excellence
The Pathway Programs’ Essential Needs Pantry exists to ensure that basic needs are not barriers to academic success. Students in programs under the Pathway Programs umbrella, like TRIO Student Support Services, Detroit M.A.D.E., FLI Vanderploeg Scholars, and Dow STEM Scholars, often face unique challenges, including financial constraints that limit access to essential items like food, hygiene products and other necessities.
When students transition to off-campus housing, they frequently lose access to easily accessible, on-campus resources, including meal plans and find themselves struggling to afford basic items. These challenges can negatively impact their ability to focus on academics and personal growth. By providing these resources within the supportive and familiar environment of the Pathway Programs office, we aim to reduce these barriers and help students thrive.
See our Amazon Wishlist for several examples of needs students have expressed.
Join Us in Breaking Barriers to Student Success!
The Essential Needs Pantry will provide critical support to students through a well-stocked resource hub in Bessey Hall. This pantry will offer non-perishable food, snacks, fresh items and personal care products tailored to meet students' immediate needs.
Our goal is to complement existing initiatives, such as the MSU Food Bank, by creating a trusted and accessible space for our program participants. This initiative aligns with our mission to foster educational success, belonging and well-being by addressing the fundamental needs that enable students to focus on their academic and personal achievements.

Who We Are: A Team Committed to Persistence, Academic Community, and Excellence
The Pathway Programs are an affirming, dynamic network of programs committed to building community, partnerships and relationships for the advocacy of holistic student success, centered in social justice and equity. As a unit, we focus on Supporting Persistence, Academic Community, and Excellence within the Detroit M.A.D.E., Dow STEM Scholars, FLI Vanderploeg Scholars and TRIO Student Support Services programs. Together, we take meaningful action to reduce opportunity gaps and support students' persistence toward graduation. Persistence is the unwavering commitment to stay the course and pursue one’s goals, despite facing challenges, obstacles or opposition. Many believe success is achievable only for those with innate talents or those who study tirelessly. Yet, without students’ persistence, even the most exceptional abilities or dedicated efforts can only go so far. We are a team who is passionate about eliminating barriers and fostering student success.
Through evidence-based initiatives, largely funded by external sources, the programs within Pathway Programs work to cultivate conditions on campus that support undergraduate student persistence.
As a network of student support, we have an ongoing commitment not only to supporting student persistence within our own programs but also to actively seeking partnerships with other units across MSU. We recognize that persistence and student success are strengthened through collective efforts, and we aim to be a hub for sharing resources, ideas, and practices that benefit all students. Together, we can create a broader, more inclusive network that supports all students in overcoming barriers and achieving their goals.
