Building Science Literacy in Michigan Communities with the MSU Science Festival

Building science literacy is crucial for the health and wellbeing of our communities. With rapidly developing advancements in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics), it can be difficult to stay up to date on the latest news and research, and many lack access to educational opportunities.

The Science Festival broadens access to education for learners of all ages across Michigan by offering free programs on MSU’s campus, in K12 classrooms and in communities and neighborhoods across the state. Our programs help attendees expand their understanding of the world around us and find joy in the science of our everyday lives.

Through our festival programs and events, we are:

  • Broadening access to educational opportunities
  • Promoting science literacy in our communities
  • Enriching lives through inspirational programming

Broadening Access to Education in Michigan

The MSU Science Festival is a free annual celebration of science, fueled by some of the basic elements essential to scientific inquiry: curiosity, wonder and discovery. Every April the MSU Science Festival welcomes thousands of learners of all ages to experience the wonders of science through programs that highlight ground-breaking scholarship and research.

This spring, festival events will return live and in person for the first time in three years! In 2025, visitors can look forward to:

  • STEAM Expo Days: Enjoy over 100 exciting hands-on activities, dazzling demonstrations and riveting talks from experts across the STEAM disciplines April 5th & 6th at the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility on MSU’s campus. This year we're bringing back our Early Childhood Zone with special programs specifically designed to support early childhood development for young scientists ages 0-8!
  • Statewide Astronomy Night: Join planetariums and observatories across the state and explore the wonders of the universe on April 12th.
  • Science After Dark Programs: We're bringing scientists out of their labs and into the community for these adult-only nights out on the town.
  • Science in the Gardens: Join us April 26 at the MSU Horticulture Gardens for a magical day full of plants, butterflies, music and more!
  • Community Science Programs: Grab your family and friends and join on of our STEAM Challenges! See who can pick up the most trash during our statewide Community Clean Up Challenge or join our BioBlitz to see how many plants, animals, fungi and other natural organisms you can identify.
  • K12 STEAM Education: The festival’s K12 programs help Michigan students make real-world connections to classroom curriculum across the STEAM disciplines. Programs include our Natives in STEAM Exploration Weekend, Girls Math and Science Day and a Student Sustainability Summit.
