The Blind Date that Lasted 56 Years.
Larry and Joanne Miller met on a blind date during the summer of 1963 in Washington, D.C. Originally from Indiana, Larry arrived in Washington, D.C. as part of his Air Force service, during which he served admirably for over 20 years. Joanne moved to Washington, D.C. from Pittsburgh to work as an administrative assistant with the federal government.
After quickly falling in love, getting married, and traveling the globe as part of Larry’s Air Force deployments, they came to settle back in Indiana with their two children. Larry and Joanne both had a passion for serving their community and helping others, something they sought to bestow upon their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Why MSU Law?
Fortunately, Larry and Joanne’s efforts to emphasize the importance of helping their community were well placed. Fast forwarding through 50 years of marriage, Larry and Joanne proudly found themselves in MSU Law’s moot courtroom watching their grandson, the first college graduate in their family, be sworn into the State Bar of Michigan.
Since that moment, their grandson, Christopher Jackson, Class of 2013, has dedicated his legal career to helping those in need as a legal aid attorney, a state government employee, and as a nonprofit leader. Due to his passion for all things MSU and his experience as a first-generation college student, Chris chose to establish the Larry and Joanne Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund in their honor. Through this fund, Chris seeks to support students facing many of the same questions and challenges he experienced leading up to and during his time in law school.
Your Support Will Make a Big Difference
The Larry and Joanne Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund will support 1L students with scholarships for many years to come. To honor Larry and Joanne’s legacy, the scholarship will provide support for students who, like Chris, are the first in their family to attend law school, and/or students who have served in any branch of the U.S. armed forces. Additionally, students who attended high school or college in the State of Indiana or Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will also be eligible.
Your support of the Larry and Joanne Miller Memorial Scholarship will help provide incoming law students with much needed financial support for years to come and will help enrich and preserve the memory of Larry and Joanne.
