Lesbian Legacies: Supporting research, activism, and artistic activities

MSU Libraries’ Murray and Hong Special Collections was established in 1962 to hold, preserve, build, and make accessible rare materials and special collections in the MSU Libraries.

In the 1970s, MSU Libraries began collecting gay and lesbian materials, which has since grown into a wide-ranging collection covering topics such as the gay liberation movement, AIDS activism, same-sex domestic partnerships, and marriage equality. Our archival collections include records of local and regional organizations, as well as personal papers of members of the Michigan LGBTQ+ community. Popular literature and LGBTQ+ centered issues can be found in the form of fiction, graphic novels, zines, and graphic art. It is a rich collection, with much breadth and depth.

Beginning with the work of Anne E. Tracy, a major focus of our collection has been material from the lesbian community. We are the stewards of several collections important to understanding lesbian history, particularly in mid-Michigan, and we continue to regularly grow our holdings. In 2018, MSU Libraries became the stewards of the Goldenrod Music archives and the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival (MWMF) archives.

Your Support Will Help Preserve History

collage of albums, including HotwireAs the scope of this collection grows, so does the scope of research opportunities that rely on these materials. With your help, we will raise funds to better promote, preserve, and make these materials accessible. This is a key collection that provides insight into the activism of lesbian and feminist womyn who have made their voices heard throughout the past decades.

Your support will help us create opportunities for researchers to travel and use these collections for research, activism, and artistic activities, and to support the preservation of these materials that shed light into the early moments of a cultural movement.

Project Budget

In 2020, the Lesbian Legacies: Amazon Cultural/Political Activism in Second Wave Feminism Endowment Fund was created by Purple—a Lansing, Michigan-based 501(c)3 feminist umbrella organization for activities and initiatives that promote lesbian and womyn’s community—in cooperation with the MSU Libraries Special Collection. The fund was established to maintain, expand, and make accessible invaluable materials from a vibrant and still extant current in lesbian herstory.

Each gift to the Lesbian Legacies: Amazon Cultural/Political Activism in Second Wave Feminism Endowment Fund will be used to fund travel fellowships and other opportunities for researchers to utilize the collection for research, activism, and artistic activities, as well as the acquisition of new materials.
