The Dr. John R. Sougstad Memorial Scholarship

Headshot of Dr. John SougstadIn September 2021, John at the age of fifty-seven met an untimely death. John Sougstad was a Spartan through and through. He obtained four degrees from Michigan State University: Doctorate of Philosophy, School Psychology (Ph.D.) 2014, Educational Specialist in School Psychology (Ed.S.) 1992, Master of Social Work, Clinical Social Work Major (M.S.W.) 1991, Bachelor of Arts, Social Work & Psychology Majors (BA) 1985.

Driven by a kind heart and dedication to a career focusing on a life of service, John served and improved the lives of countless individuals in the community. He was very interested in cultivating the development of human connections through the opportunity of education for all. John supported inclusion in learning environments for the success and positive outcomes for all students. He served with humility and kindness, sensitive to the children, as well the families he served. John’s beautiful smile, genuine kindness, and joyful laughter will forever be in the hearts of all those who knew him.

The John R. Sougstad Memorial Scholarship was created to provide encouragement and assistance to students within the College of Education. It is intended to provide additional resources needed to advance the recipients in their disciplines while in pursuit of their passion, as they discover their talents as educators.
