Japan Center for Michigan Universities 30th Anniversary

Students participating in a traditional Japanese ceremonyIn 2018 the Japan Center for Michigan Universities celebrated our 30th anniversary. During this time, over 2,000 students have traveled to our center in Hikone and immersed themselves in Japanese culture. JCMU alumni have gone on to work in the U.S. federal government, as teachers in Japan, and everywhere in between.

Unfortunately, the rising costs of education are slowly making JCMU financially difficult for many prospective students. To alleviate some of these concerns, we began the Melville Endowed Scholarship Fund. Through this fund, we aim to financially support the next generation of JCMU students seeking their own life‒changing experiences in Japan.

Support the Next 30 Years of Study in Hikone

For our 30th anniversary, we are celebrating the most important part of JCMU: our students! From February through September, we are posting one student testimonial every week as part of our “30 Years, 30 Stories” campaign. Alumni from 2018 all the way back to our first program in 1989 have participated thus far.

We also want to support the next 30 years of JCMU. In reaching our goal, we will be able to provide one additional scholarship annually to future students. As such, your investment will enable dozens of JCMU students over the next 30 years to achieve their own international experiences in Hikone.

Investing in the Future of JCMU

A beautiful scene of the landscapes of JapanCurrently, the Melville Endowed Scholarship Fund is only able to financially support a small number of students every year. Your investment will help us expand the program, so that prospective students will have the same opportunities in Hikone as our past students.

Funds raised will be reinvested directly back into our endowment. The endowment funds will never be withdrawn; rather, scholarship funds come from the interest the endowment earns annually. As such, your investment will continue to impact JCMU students for decades to come.

About JCMU

Students gathered on their trip to JapanThe Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) is a study abroad program born of a desire to build and strengthen relationships between Japanese, Americans, and people of every nationality. JCMU’s programs give students the opportunity to study language and culture on the shore of Lake Biwa while participating in the community of the City of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, where the center is located.

JCMU is committed to providing programs that allow students to create meaningful intercultural experiences while participating in academic studies of the highest caliber. JCMU strives to be affordable for students of every background, regardless of training or experience, while providing access to a diverse selection of academic and intercultural activities. Participants from colleges and universities worldwide are welcome.
