The Flint “Brush Up on Oral Health” Community Health Fair

The Flint Water Crisis has created significant health complications for city residents. One rarely discussed consequence of the disaster is oral health. Tap water includes fluoride and quite simply, fluoride prevents cavities!

Unfortunately, the majority of people living in Flint cannot drink their tap water. As a result, their oral health is in danger, especially the children of Flint. In addition, the latest Flint community health survey found that 39 percent of Flint adults have not seen a dentist in the past 12 months.

As a result, the MSU College of Human Medicine and the Flint Community Based Organization Partners (CBOP) have decided to do something about this alarming statistic. With your help, MSU and CBOP will work side-by-side with MSU Extension and Mott Community College to hold an Oral Health Fair for the city on October 1, 2016.

Your Support Will Make a Big Difference!

Your support is essential in making the Oral Health Fair a success. Your gift will help us:

flint oral health flier
  • Assess the oral health status of Flint residents.
  • Provide oral health education and preventive information.
  • Refer people in need of treatment to Flint dentists.
  • Enroll people in dental insurance plans.
  • Follow up with participants to ask if they were able to see a dentist.

Project Budget

While our community partners are providing some support, we still need vital supplies for the day. This is why your gift is crucial to the success of the fair.

Our $3,000 goal will help cover necessities for the patients, doctors and volunteers, including clinical supplies for the dentists (dental mirrors, lamps, gloves, tongue blades), miscellaneous supplies (forms, clipboards, pens, banners, educational brochures) as well the fee for facility rental for the day.

Who We Are

We are a group of community-based public health advocates who reside and work in Flint. This project is led by a steering committee that includes representatives from Flint’s Community Based Organization Partners (CBOP) and the MSU College of Human Medicine’s Division of Public Health. CBOP is comprised of over forty NGOs whose mission is to mobilize underrepresented and underserved communities to achieve health equity and social justice.

MSU is the first land-grant university established in the United States. MSU’s College of Human Medicine has delivered quality medical services to Flint residents for 47 years and has recently expanded its public health mission in Flint by developing community based partnerships.
