FAME Program

The FAME (Fostering Academics Mentoring Excellence) Program is a community program of the MSU School of Social Work that exists to provide support and resources to MSU students who have experienced foster care, kinship care, homelessness and other out-of-home placements.

The FAME Program serves around 75 students each year and works directly with students to provide a wide range of services including:

  • life skills coaching
  • mentoring
  • trainings and workshops
  • social events
  • peer support AND community building
  • leadership skill development
  • scholarships and basic needs

Student participants in the FAME program develop a community (also known as the “FAME-ily”) with their fellow peers, volunteer mentors and program staff. The FAME office functions as a gathering place for students, and a space where they can find solace, support and refuge from their busy lives. For many, the FAME office is a safe place where students can take a break, connect with peers, ask questions, find support, and receive tangible resources and basic-needs items. Our current office space presents limitations and challenges in best meeting the needs of our students as it is not set up to support the range of activities and services we provide.

Give to MSU FAME and Help Build a Safe Community!

With your help, the FAME program will be able to enhance existing office space and develop the FAME Student Resource Center. Emphasizing student safety and comfort, the newly designed space will incorporate elements of trauma informed design while best meeting the functional needs of the program and supporting student success. Key features of the resource center will include:

  • Private meeting space for individual coaching sessions
  • Technologically enhanced working areas to support students’ academic and professional goals
  • Storage for the FAME community care closet, which features donated items of food, toiletries and school supplies
  • Comfortable and flexible seating arrangements
  • Hospitality center featuring comfort amenities such as access to coffee, tea, and water

Who We Are

The FAME Program is a community program of the MSU School of Social Work and is staffed and supported by social work faculty and students. The unique community programs model emphasizes service delivery, teaching and research. Under the supervision of a full-time faculty coordinator, graduate and undergraduate social work students work directly with FAME students as part of their field placement.  Read more about our team at http://fame.socialwork.msu.edu/Who-We-Are

All undergraduate MSU students with a qualifying lived experience are eligible to participate in the FAME program. Learn more about the students we serve here at https://alumni.msu.edu/stay-informed/magazine/article.cfm?id=2685
