Supporting Former Foster Youth at MSU

The FAME (Fostering Academics Mentoring Excellence) program is a community program of the MSU School of Social Work that exists to provide support and resources to MSU students who have experienced foster care, kinship care, homelessness and other out-of-home placements.

The mission of the FAME program is to increase the educational outcomes of foster care alumni by promoting access to, and successful completion of, higher education programs. We accomplish this through establishing campus and community partnerships, developing supportive networks and providing individualized services to students. Services provided to students include: life skills coaching, mentoring, leadership training, skill building workshops and connections to resources and supports on campus.

Your Support Will Make a Big Difference

Each semester, during finals week, we provide up to 40 FAME participants with a ‘Finals Week Survival Kit.’ Each kit contains an assortment of personal care items, school supplies and snacks to help get them through the final push of the semester.

Survival kits are gifted during a social event, offering the students a break from the stress and pressure of studying for exams and an opportunity to connect with their peers. Many of these students may not otherwise receive a care package, support or encouragement during the stress of final exams. This effort is successful not just because it meets a tangible need, but also because of the overwhelming emotional gratification and social support it provides to these students.

Project Budget

The finals week survival kits are funded completely through donations. One hundred percent of funds collected will be used to purchase supplies for 40 survival kits as well as to offset the costs of hosting the finals week celebration for FAME students.

Who We Are

The FAME program is a community program of the MSU School of Social Work and is staffed and supported by social work faculty and students. The unique community programs model emphasizes service delivery, teaching and research. Under the supervision of a full-time faculty coordinator, four graduate and undergraduate social work students work directly with FAME students as part of their field placement.

Participants in the FAME program are undergraduate MSU students who span across all colleges, majors and backgrounds.
