ComArtSci Ignite

ComArtSci’s Ignite is a five-day residential bridge program intended to support student’s transition from high school to college and allow them to learn more about our academic programs. This program is a key opportunity in our DEI programs.

Choosing a major can be overwhelming, and students often struggle to determine which program is best suited to their skills and career interests. The MSU Ignite program will allow students to explore their interests and become more familiar with college before setting foot on campus this fall.

In July 2021, 12 incoming freshmen completed this inaugural program and they have continued to share the impact of the program on their college experience. Our goal is to double the number of opportunities for summer 2022 and build a stronger cohort experience throughout the year.

Give to ComArtSci Ignite and Help Double the Number of Students Benefitting

Director Lauren Gaines McKenzie said summer bridge programs like ComArtSci’s Ignite are critical to student success, particularly for first-generation college students from historically marginalized communities. Over the course of a week, students design an ad campaign with the direction of ComArtSci faculty. The students then present their work to their parents and peers. The program offers students added support, through a variety of mentors and connections created with their peers. As the MSU Ignite program grows, the college will begin to search for mentors who can lend their skills and talents to the summer bridge academy.

Twelve students. Five days. A lifetime of opportunity

The program is run by ComArtSci Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Lauren Gaines McKenzie. Program coordinators include current ComArtSci graduate students.
