MSU’s Collegiate Recovery Community & Recovery Housing

The Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) serves students in or seeking recovery from, alcohol and other drug addiction. MSU’s data supports the need for expanding recovery services, with 3.2% of Spartans reporting that they identify as being in recovery - which equates to an estimated 1,534 students who may need recovery supports. The CRC is a campus haven where students in recovery from addiction are free to be themselves. Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive campus community in which students in recovery can successfully achieve their academic, personal and professional goals. Recovery services offered include weekly support meetings, individualized recovery planning, 24-hour access to the collegiate recovery lounge, counseling support, academic resources, organized sober activities, wellness and life skills workshops, and Recovery Housing. Recovery Housing is an on-campus option that offers a supportive living environment where students can have a real college experience and form meaningful relationships based on sobriety, friendship, and academic success. Additional resources offered through Recovery Housing include a live-in peer support specialist and the Jamie Daniels Memorial Scholarship. We are asking for your help to expand scholarship awards to all students in recovery in need of financial support.

“Being in recovery is difficult. Being successful in college is difficult. Doing both simultaneously is next to impossible. The support and services of the MSU CRC are absolutely essential to ensuring that we students in recovery have a chance to have a positive and fulfilling college experience." –MSU CRC Student

Your Support Will Make a Big Difference

Recovery members at a painting eventFinancial supports is particularly important for students in recovery to successfully engage in college as many have used college savings to pay for the cost of treatment, are no longer eligible for federal financial aid, or have other financial responsibilities that stand as barriers to affording higher education. CRC members need you to help meet the financial demands of being a student in recovery working to overcome these impediments to their academic goals. With your help, Spartans in recovery will be able to apply for up to $500 per semester to cover essential health, wellness, academic, and living expenses such as the following:

  • First month rent for a student returning to college after completing a treatment program
  • Semester of tutoring
  • Purchase a bike for transportation and exercise/stress coping tool
  • Groceries to get a student by until pay day
  • Grad program application fee
  • Gas to travel to jobs and recovery support meetings
  • Student membership in the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE)
  • Insurance co-pay so a student can access a needed medication
  • Participate in weekend sober activities with SOAR (Spartans’ Organization for All Recovery), MSU’s registered student organization for Spartans in recovery and their allies

Our Give Green Day goal of $5,000 will allow us to support 10 students spring semester or 5 students over the full academic year and provide an important incentive to keep students engaged in activities conducive to maintaining sobriety. The CRC currently has 25 students actively involved in recovery programming on campus and expects that number to grow. At present, the full need for the current scholarship program is $25,000 annually.
