Alex’s Great State Race

Alex Powell was a high school senior, a dedicated student, an enthusiastic athlete, and a natural leader. When he found that a rare, aggressive cancer was growing inside of him, Alex was determined to achieve his dream of attending Michigan State University and fully participating in his Spartan experience. As the disease began to take its toll, he turned to MSU’s Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities and experts at the University of Michigan’s cancer center.

Alex Powell, smiling and wearing a blue shirt, posing between two trees. Alex never lost his zest for life. He shared the ultimate dream that lives inside each of us: to leave the world in better shape than he found it. That legacy lives on through Alex’s Great State Race.

Each year, ROTC cadets from MSU and University of Michigan run the Rivalry Game Ball from campus to campus in honor of Alex and to raise funds for students with disabilities. Donations in celebration of this symbolic partnership will help support the work of the RCPD at MSU.

Give to Alex’s Great State Race and help MSU students with disabilities maximize their ability and opportunity here at State!

This year, rather than running a physical race, we will be focusing on a campaign of gratitude to honor our donors, sponsors, and everyone who has participated to bring Alex’s Great State Race to life over the past seven years. Money raised through MSU Giving Tuesday will continue to support students at MSU’s Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities in reaching their educational goals.

The Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) serves nearly 2700 Spartan students with disabilities by securing accommodations and providing assistive services that help remove barriers and ensure equal access to all educational experiences, thereby maximizing ability and opportunity for success!

The AGSR Planning Committee is made up of RCPD and SSD staff, as well as steadfast sponsors, volunteers, and friends/family of Alex who are dedicated to carrying along his spirit and drive and working to expand disability awareness and services to all students.
