Help Equip Rec Sports with Two Adaptive Sport Wheelchairs
At Recreational Sports and Fitness, we want to expand our adaptive sports program to include sport wheelchairs. There is a gap in access to wheelchair sports, such as basketball, due to the limited availability of adaptive sport wheelchairs on campus. Rec Sports hopes to fill this gap by purchasing wheelchairs for student use—enabling us to enhance adaptive sports programs and services at the IM facilities.
Your Support Will Increase Accessibility
Rec Sports aims to provide opportunities for all to engage in sports and recreation. The Adaptive Rec Program offers students with various mobility, and visual acuity, time to socialize and enjoy the benefits of recreation. Students have requested weekly wheelchair basketball, but we do not have access to the wheelchairs required to safely offer it at this time. We hope the purchase of these wheelchairs will foster belonging among all Spartans who wish to participate in sports.
Your support will enable more Spartans to play and enjoy an outstanding Rec Sports experience while on campus.
Project Budget
Recreational Sports and Fitness Services hopes to acquire six adaptive sport wheelchairs to accommodate 3-on-3 basketball.
Your gift will go directly towards purchasing the first two wheelchairs for the Adaptive Rec program. Each chair will cost approximately $3,745 including necessary safety add-ons.
Who We Are
Recreational Sports and Fitness Services has offered adapted recreation on campus for over 35 years.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are a top priority for Student Life & Engagement and Rec Sports. We work hard to listen to the needs and requests to expand our Adaptive Rec Program. We offer a variety of sports including sit volleyball, adaptive pickleball, and recently installed an accessible dock and launch at the MSU Sailing Center. We hope to add wheelchair basketball to this list with your support.
Should you wish to learn about making a significant impact on the Adaptive Rec Program, please contact Danielle Matlick, Associate Director of Development.
