Emergency funds provide crucial resources for students

Moments of unexpected hardships are certain in life, but MSU students can be certain of another thing: their fellow Spartans are always there to help. There are many emergency funds available for students who find themselves in financial crisis, so that they can continue their academic journey.

Many units at Michigan State provide emergency funding, such as the LaMonte Student Emergency Fund within the College of Communication Arts & Sciences. This fund provides flexible assistance in a timely manner to address extraordinary and unexpected financial hardships that could derail a student’s education.

The founder, Gary LaMonte believes emergency funds are a crucial student resource. “I know there are people who work hard and still struggle. By creating and giving to this student emergency fund, my goal is to make an impact today when someone most needs it.”

Because of LaMonte’s generosity, fourth-year student Moriah Hartfield could continue pursuing her dreams to become a public relations specialist. “I didn’t have to worry about getting more hours at my restaurant job or having to drop out because I couldn’t afford things. Receiving the funds helped me feel taken care of. I could be a regular student and enjoy student life.”

On Give Green Day, your support of emergency funds helps students like Moriah finish their studies strong. The following colleges and programs are using Give Green Day to focus on emergency scholarship funds:
