September 11, 2015Michigan State University’s Empower Extraordinary capital campaign has hit a $1 billion milestone.
Through August 31, 2015, $1,012,005,798 billion has been committed toward a $1.5 billion campaign goal. The announcement comes less than one year after the public phase of the campaign began on October 24, 2014. The university embarked on the silent phase of the campaign in July 2011. At the time of the public announcement, more than $780 million had been raised in gift commitments.
The last two fiscal years, 2013-14 and 2014-15, have been record setting for the university with more than $238 million raised each year. Individuals have made 57 percent of the campaign gifts.
“Empower Extraordinary has been embraced by volunteers, friends and alumni who are invested in making MSU the greatest university of its kind,” said MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon. “We are grateful for this outpouring of support, which is helping to place MSU on a strong and sustainable financial footing to assure that innovation and opportunity will continue to thrive at MSU now and well into the future.”
A major goal of the campaign is to increase MSU’s endowed faculty professorship and chair positions by 100, to bring MSU’s total to 200. To date, new endowments for 36 positions have been established. At the start of the campaign, MSU’s number of endowed faculty positions was among the smallest in the Big Ten.
Additionally, nearly 800 scholarship and fellowship funds have been created during the campaign to support students. Seventy percent, $278 million, of a $400 million campaign goal to support students and programs has been reached.
More than $404 million has been added to MSU endowments during the campaign. The combined value of MSU’s endowment and the related MSU Foundation topped $2.5 billion for the first time as of June 30, 2014. The MSU endowments are held in numerous funds specifically designated for scholarships, faculty recruitment and support, research and other functions.
Every gift is important. More than 221,000 donors have made a gift to the campaign.
