Support MSU Literary Journal The Offbeat
The Offbeat is the MSU student-run literary journal that seeks to publish undisputedly unique works of fiction, poetry, prose and graphic short stories. The magazine allows Professional Writing and English students to explore the many aspects of creating an annual publication, including establishing the identity of the journal and producing and marketing the completed volume.
Students are able to pursue these goals with the guidance of the Writing, Rhetoric and American Cultures department. Financial support allows the journal to continue its now sixteen-year legacy of bringing thought-provoking writings to the Michigan State community and beyond.
Your Support Will Make a Big Difference
“We choose to go off the beaten path. We embrace the weeds and the brambles. We see the cuts on our ankles from the thorns as stories that need to be told. We feel our damp sneakers and that this, this is what it means to be home. This is a path that allows us to simply be ourselves with all of our prettiest and ugliest imperfections, all making perfect sense.”
These are the opening words of Vol. 15, which proved to be the journal’s biggest year to date, publishing writers from seven countries and receiving more submissions than ever before. We hope to continue this trajectory with the 2016 edition and have many ideas on ways to expand the journal even further. Funding creates many opportunities for growth and allows us to print and distribute copies around the Lansing area.
Project Budget
Funding for The Offbeat would allow us to cover production fees, most notably the cost of printing and distributing the new edition. Though an online edition will be available, any booklover knows there is nothing quite like holding a print copy in your hands. Donations also allow us to continue placing our call for submissions with internationally recognized writer’s resources.
Additionally, monetary support helps us enhance our presence in the East Lansing community and beyond. We hope to gain recognition by posting marketing materials in the area, hosting public events, and making the volume available at Lansing’s favorite local bookstores, all made possible by your generous support.
Who We Are
This year’s editorial team consists of both Professional Writing and English majors dedicated to producing a volume that continues the tradition of publishing writing that falls off the beaten path. The Offbeat has an incredible history as a platform for talented writers often overlooked, and the current staff hopes to again provide this stage in the upcoming publication.
