Student Organic Farm

Students picking carrots at the Student Organic FarmFrom the beginning, the aim of the Student Organic Farm was to provide a place where students could volunteer, work, visit, and make lasting contributions to the development of the land and farm.

There are many ways for students to gain experience and education at the SOF, but being an undergraduate student crew member is by far the most meaningful. Each season, about 20 undergraduate crew members gain hands-on experience producing organic fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs, as well as a deeper understanding of organic farming, food, and community.

The undergraduate students on our crew are the heart and soul of the Student Organic Farm.

Help Us Extend This Opportunity to More Students in 2020

Our students learn about the daily operations of the farm, from seeding, planting, and pruning to cultivating, harvesting, and marketing. Crew members also develop strong leadership skills conducting tours for MSU courses and for the public, coordinating volunteers, and teaching other student farmers the skills they’ve learned. 

From Engineering to Horticulture to English to Arabic, our student crew comes from a range of disciplines, bringing wonderfully diverse perspectives to the farm and taking their farming experiences and greater understanding of the food system back to their various fields of study. Whether they become farmers or chefs, doctors or lawyers, business owners or teachers, students gain confidence and build career skills on the farm that last a lifetime.

The ingredients to the Student Organic Farm’s success are sunshine, water, good soil, and the support of the MSU community. Through your generous donations, we will be able to financially support two additional full-time student crew members to see the 2020 season through on the farm. 

Who Grows There?

The MSU Student Organic Farm is a 15-acre, certified organic, year-round teaching and production farm.

It is a place where many different groups are able to engage with growing food and creating learning opportunities through farming.

Our teaching includes:

  • Employment-based undergraduate training
  • Undergraduate field trips, internships, capstone projects, and service learning connections with credit-bearing undergraduate courses at MSU
  • An 8-month Organic Farmer Training Program (OFTP) in year-round organic farming
  • Farmer Field School workshop series focused on increased profitability of diversified, sustainable farms in their first 10 years hosted on farms around the state and taught by farmers

Our harvest goes to:

  • MSU’s all-season CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
  • MSU’s on-campus farm stand
  • MSU dining halls and off-campus wholesale outlets
  • Food banks on campus and the greater Lansing community
