Spartan Upcycle Student Engagement
Support Student Engagement and Creative Reuse
Spartan Upcycle is the creative reuse program powered by the MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center (SSRC). We host DIY arts & crafts events, support residence assistants and student organizations, and partner with academic classes to bring hands-on creative reuse opportunities to students. Materials for reuse are sourced from the discarded resources collected through SSRC’s operations.
Our experience has shown that creative reuse paves the way to rethink traditional definitions of value and reimagine possibilities. Spartan Upcycle events help establish lifelong skills which lead to social, economic and environmental benefits.
Your Support Will Make a Big Difference
The Spartan Upcycle Student Engagement Fund will allow us to purchase equipment, tools and supplies for student use; invite experienced instructors to teach free workshops; and cover expenses and event-related fees.
By providing free materials and project guidance in an encouraging environment, Spartan Upcycle makes upcycling accessible for students, regardless of their prior experience.

Our “wish list” includes items like those listed below that make it possible to repurpose and rework the materials commonly sourced from SSRC operations, such as textiles, cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, wood, and glass.
- Sewing machine ($250) and related supplies for mending clothing
- Rock tumbler ($60) to turn broken glass into craft material
- Hand tools ($75) for making jewelry and household items
Who We Are
Spartan Upcycle supports SSRC’s mission to utilize waste as a resource and is a valuable tool for creating sustainable habits. The student-centered programming aims to inspire and promote creativity, imagination, resource conservation, and sense of community among Spartans.
