Spartan Basic Needs Fund

Many Spartans face challenges accessing basic necessities that are crucial to their health and well-being. Personal hygiene items, warm winter gear, cleaning supplies and food are essential resources for Spartans to thrive, but not all have reliable access to them. 

The Spartan Basic Needs Fund aims to ensure that every Spartan, including those at regional campuses such as Detroit, Flint, Macomb and Grand Rapids, has access to these critical resources. Your support will help make this possible, allowing students to focus on their education and well-being. 

Your Support Will Make a Big Difference

The Spartan Basic Needs Fund will create a centralized hub to address these critical needs. Quarterly distributions will ensure Spartans at all MSU campuses have access to personal hygiene products, warm winter gear, cleaning supplies and essential food items as available.

Spartans at regional campuses—Detroit, Flint, Macomb and Grand Rapids—will receive additional support due to their limited access to the MSU Student Food Bank. By supporting this initiative, you’ll empower Spartans to meet their individual needs while enhancing their academic success and well-being. 

Project Budget

Every dollar raised will directly support Spartans by providing these vital resources. With your help, we can meet our $5,000 goal and equitable access to basic needs. 

 Your donation will be used to purchase and distribute products such as: 

$10: Covers one dining hall meal for a Spartan in immediate need. 

$25: Provides basic cooking supplies such as utensils, pots and pans to help a Spartan prepare meals at home. 

$45: Covers five dining hall meals for a Spartan, ensuring access to healthy meals during a critical time. 

$50: Provides a month’s supply of personal hygiene items, including soap, deodorant, shampoo and dental supplies for a Spartan. 

$250: Funds five grocery-only gift cards, helping multiple Spartans purchase fresh produce, proteins and culturally relevant foods. 

$500: Supports multiple Spartans with a combination of grocery-only gift cards, personal hygiene items and warm winter gear, ensuring equitable access to these resources for one quarter. 

Who We Are

The project is led by the Engagement Team within UHW at MSU, with vital support from student employees, interns and guidance from the Hunger Free and Basic Needs Task Force (HFBNT). The HFBNT is a cross-campus coalition of professionals dedicated to addressing food insecurity and the other essential needs of MSU students. Working collaboratively, we coordinate logistics, develop partnerships and manage quarterly distributions to ensure equitable access to resources for Spartans across all MSU campuses.
