Support Hands-on Learning with RISE (Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment)

In RISE students engage in hands-on learning related to environmental stewardship. This is a place where we see students form community that is essential to their academic success. We bond over cooking food from our greenhouse, creating healthy ecosystems, growing fresh basil, and caring for our rooftop bees. To provide these hands-on learning experiences, we continually need resources such as tools, seed, beekeeping equipment, pruning shears, even waders for maintenance of the river. Additional support for our students to attend national environmental science conferences or leadership training add to the benefits of RISE.

Each year, an extraordinary team of paid student staff and volunteers are selected to manage and operate the Bailey Greenhouse and Urban Farm. These students come from a variety of majors and backgrounds all united in their passion for healthy nutritious food and a sustainable food system. This team does everything from providing tours to elementary schools to planning, planting, and harvesting crops.  Our student staff also provides important mentoring and tutoring for first year students.

Your gift today helps us continue to provide the tools (literally) that keep our bees buzzing and our greenhouse growing! With your gift of $25 or $50 we can purchase needed harvesting and planting supplies, and with $150 we can provide beehive suits for our student beekeepers. Larger gifts of $300+ allow us to offer to cover a student’s registration fees for an environmental leadership conference.
