Spartan Nurses Care Packages for the Unhoused: Health Equity & Compassion

Michigan State University College of Nursing is launching a recurring initiative to provide essential care packages to individuals experiencing homelessness in the greater Lansing area. These packages will contain hygiene products, medical supplies and seasonal necessities to address their immediate health and wellness needs. Our mission is to reduce health disparities and provide critical resources to those who need them most.

By working closely with local shelters and soup kitchens, we have identified the most pressing needs of the unhoused population. This project aligns with MSU College of Nursing’s commitment to community engagement, offering students meaningful opportunities to serve and learn while making a tangible impact.

Your Support Will Make a Difference

This initiative will distribute care packages three times a year—Winter (November-February), Spring (March-May) and Late Summer (August-September)—to address seasonal challenges faced by the unhoused community. Our goal is to assemble and distribute 300+ care packages per distribution cycle.

By involving MSU nursing students and partnering with local businesses for donations, we ensure the sustainability of this program. Your contribution will provide much-needed resources and make a lasting impact in our local community.

Project Budget

Funds raised may be used to purchase hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant), first aid supplies, socks, gloves and other necessities. We will also use contributions to source bulk items at discounted rates, ensuring each package is as comprehensive and impactful as possible.

Additionally, funding will support logistical needs such as packaging materials and transportation to distribution sites. Every dollar donated directly benefits individuals in need, improving their health and well-being.

Who We Are

The MSU College of Nursing is leading this initiative, with students, faculty and community volunteers working together to make a difference. Our nursing students play an active role in assembling and distributing care packages, gaining hands-on experience in community outreach and advocacy.

This project is a testament to MSU Nursing’s commitment to service and health equity, ensuring that we remain a force for good in the Lansing area and beyond.
