Michigan State University Formula Racing Team
The Michigan State Formula Racing Team is a group of twenty-seven dedicated engineering students who design, build, and race a formula-style open-wheel race car each year in the world’s largest collegiate design series – Formula SAE.
This year, the team is constructing a brand-new vehicle from the ground up as part of the team’s three-year design cycle. This involves completely redesigning the car’s chassis, suspension, aerodynamics, and electronics
Help Support the Next Generation of Engineers
For over thirty years, the MSU Formula SAE Racing Team has provided its members the opportunity to apply classroom principles to problem-solving scenarios in a fast-paced work environment. As a result, experienced members of the team are poised to make an immediate impact in the workforce through their in-depth understanding of technical theory, manufacturing processes, and project management. By contributing to the team, you are directly supporting the success of current engineering students in their pursuit of going above and beyond outside of the classroom.
Project Budget
The funds raised will be used to procure items that are unable to be donated directly to the team, such as tires for testing and competition (approx. $3000/year), registration fees for competition (approx. $2500/year), personal protective equipment such as respirators and face shields (approx. $1000 per year), and travel expenses to and from Michigan International Speedway in May (approx. $1000/year).
Although the team largely operates based on in-kind donations such as carbon fiber, epoxy resin, steel, and aluminum, monetary contributions are also required to keep the team afloat. With the support of generous donations, the team will be able to purchase the required components that remain for this year’s vehicle build as well as pay for travel to the FSAE competition in May.
Who We Are
The MSU Formula Racing Team is composed of sixteen leaders and eleven new members, all coming from different walks of life and majors such as mechanical engineering, finance, computer science, and electrical engineering. This team of individuals all have one thing in common: the desire to build a perennial top-ten race car, compete at the top level of collegiate design, and represent Michigan State University on a global stage.
