Support the MSU Fiction Filmmaking Capstone Student-Run Film

The Michigan State University Fiction Filmmaking Capstone provides an amazing opportunity for student filmmakers of varying backgrounds, majors, and focuses to put forth their expertise to create an intriguing short film from scratch to screen. Years of learning, prerequisites, and a very special shared passion for the art of filmmaking blend to create a product worth feeling equally as passionate about.

In just two semesters, these unique students work diligently to tackle each phase of the film life cycle as a genuine unit. From writing, producing, designing, casting, shooting, directing, editing, marketing, and distributing to audiences at film festivals across the state and country, everyone takes on their role with much consideration. All the while managing the individual student life rigor and adversities that flow their way.

This project provides a stepping stone for students soon entering the film industry as professionals and future Spartan graduates. It supplies each individual with real-world experience, material to use in their portfolios and resumes, and name recognition at film festivals, furthering students' skills immensely in a manner specific to their roles.

Your Support Will Help Us Make It All the Way

Our film, Promises, Promises, tells the story of Winona Adamson, a college girl who must return to her small hometown when her older sister dies from extremely bizarre circumstances. Like anyone in that situation, Winona struggles to navigate her grief alongside her aspiring comedian best friend, Hudson, in the small town where everyone knows everyone. While it may come as a surprise, the film successfully generates comedic relief despite the logically darker, more dramatic elements throughout. It is a film that will take you through several emotions.

The inspiration for Promises, Promises comes from the importance of friendship and family and the pain of losing a loved one. The film also explores the complex dynamics that can emerge from leaving and returning to the town where you grew up, only to find that while you have changed, maybe home hasn’t.

How Your Investment Will Help

Each year the class is graciously given a budget of $5,000 for production needs. While $5,000 is a large sum of money, the cost to create a film that accommodates the needs of a large crew and cast and upscaled production certainly drains that budget. With that in mind, money raised will help go toward:

  • Keeping the cast, crew, and extras fed during long shooting hours (better quality pizza)
  • Secure any final props or materials needed in the unfinished scenes
  • Ordering Promises, Promises merchandise items
  • Marketing and promotional materials
  • Covering costs for Film Festival entries
  • Red Carpet Premiere for the cast, crew, family, and public
  • Wrap party for cast and crew to celebrate a year of hard work
  • We'd like to note that any money leftover will be passed down to next year's capstone class' budget

With your investment, this film will not only be one step closer to completion but one step closer to being viewed by audiences, professionals, and most importantly, you.

Passionately Driven Student Filmmakers

This project is run entirely by us students under the experienced eyes of two full-time MSU Film Professors. Every single one of us has come together, driven by our distinct passions for film to accomplish one common goal. As students, we thrive under multiple departments, from producing, directing, camera and gripping, sound design, art direction, behind-the-scenes, and marketing roles.
