Educating One Farmworker at a Time

According to the 2013 Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Enumeration Profiles Study (Larson), 49,135 families are estimated to work in Michigan. Imagine having to work long hours in the scorching summer heat alongside your family just to make ends meet. In addition, imagine having to keep up with school, in spite of it being continually interrupted due to the family’s need to follow the crop season. For many agricultural farmworker students, life is about balancing work to contribute to the family income and attending school.

The College Assistance Migrant Program Scholars Initiative (MSU CAMP), offers individuals of migrant or seasonal agricultural farmworker backgrounds a unique opportunity to begin an undergraduate education program at Michigan State University. The program offers supportive services to help first generation, low-income students successfully transition to MSU. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, MSU CAMP was initiated on June 1, 2000, and is a unique program designed to recruit, support, and retain migrant and seasonal agricultural farmworker students at Michigan State University.

Your Support Will Make a Big Difference

The program is funded from the U.S. Department of Education to support students during their first year of college. Your financial contribution is critical after the first year. This campaign is aimed towards extending the availability of transitional supportive services for all continuing CAMP Scholars.

MSU’s College Assistance Migrant Program was initiated in 2000 and is a unique program designed to service incoming migrant and seasonal farm worker students

The majority of MSU CAMP Scholars hold one or more jobs throughout college to support themselves financially. Many go through semesters without textbooks as they prioritize tuition and lodging. Oftentimes, holidays are spent away from family because of the costliness of travel.

Project Budget

This campaign is aimed to support upper classmen CAMP Scholars to continue their education at MSU. All funds will be used for academic and transitional purposes for students that are in good academic standing with the university. Funds will be used for tuition, room and board, textbooks, essential testing costs, and emergency travel. Students served must successfully complete one full year of full-time study at MSU, be enrolled as full-time students, and have financial need.

Who We Are

Since June 1, 2000, MSU CAMP has proudly recruited 60+ scholars each year. Today, there are over 250 MSU CAMP scholars enrolled at MSU who are continuing to pursue their academic goals. With your contribution, MSU CAMP Scholars will have a better chance to achieve their academic goals and graduation.
