Support the MSU Rocketry Team
The Michigan State Rocketry Team was created at the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year by a small number of engineering students. These students created the team with the goal of promoting interest in aerospace engineering at Michigan State, as our university doesn't currently offer an aerospace engineering degree program. During our first year as an organization, we designed and built our first rocket, Spartacus 1, which we used to compete in the 2018 Spaceport America Cup in Las Cruces, New Mexico. At the competition, we placed 12th out of more than 100 universities from around the world.
This year, we are designing and building a hybrid engine rocket that utilizes both solid and liquid fuel, with which we will compete in the 2019 Spaceport America Cup. This project gives 30+ Spartan Engineers the chance to learn how to apply their field of study to aerospace engineering, and the opportunity to pursue their passion for high-powered rocketry.
Michigan State Rocketry is also one of the teams that makes up Spartan Aerosystems, a group that brings guest speakers in the field of aerospace engineering to MSU’s campus.
Your Support Will Make a Big Difference
Your gift will help us cover the cost of raw materials used to build our rocket, as well as travel and competition expenses!
Our 2019 hybrid motor competition rocket project allows Spartan engineers to explore their interest in high-powered rocketry, and to learn how their major can be applied to the field of aerospace engineering. These opportunities are only made available to MSU’s students through MSU Rocketry and Spartan Aerosystems.
Our competition also offers our members networking, internship, and career opportunities, as representatives from many of the largest aerospace engineering companies attend the Spaceport America Cup. Because of this, the more members we can afford to send to the competition, the better!
We estimate the remaining materials needed to complete our 2019 rocket project will cost between $2,000 and $3,000. Our travel and competition expenses will likely exceed $3,000 and will depend on how many of our team members wish to attend the Spaceport America Cup in June.
Your contributions will be used to purchase materials and components for this year’s rocket and will ensure that all our team members who wish to participate in the 2019 Spaceport America Cup can attend the competition.
Who We Are
Our team is made up of more than 30 MSU students across all fields of engineering. These students work in several different sub-teams led by experienced upper classmen that design and manufacture the different portions of our competition rocket.
