Lyman Briggs College Student Emergency Fund

On top of the recent violence our campus experienced, our students are facing financial emergencies every day and small gifts can make a big difference. These unforeseen expenses put paying for that next semester just out of reach.

In 2022 alone, we received an overwhelming number of requests for student emergency funds, awarding over $12,000. This increased demand has depleted our Student Emergency Fund completely.

A few requests below highlight the very real financial need of our students.

At this point, I have poured almost all of my tuition money for next year into supporting my family and am desperate for help. I’m at a point in my life where I need to be studying for the MCAT, but I can’t afford the books to study. I am falling way behind my peers, any help would be much appreciated.

“I have supported myself during my whole four years of college but had to quit my job due to the fact that I was working so many hours and taking 17 credits - it was taking a toll on my health. Any amount would be greatly appreciated so that I don't fall extremely behind on bills and am able to keep a few groceries in the house.”

I've had to pick up more jobs on campus and dedicate more hours to working instead of studying. I'm currently working three distinct positions. The money I earn directly goes towards paying my rent on time and has been an incredible burden to manage. Any funds would help to ease the intense financial issues I'm currently struggling through

“My apartment building flooded this past week and I lost everything. I have no living situation, as well as no transportation. I am forced to eat out when I can because I no longer have groceries or a kitchen to cook in.  I am already very tight on money and my parents do not support me financially. This situation has led me to work longer hours to make up for additional expenses, which has started to conflict with my schoolwork. I am a student first and any type of support would be greatly appreciated.”

Gifts to the Lyman Briggs College Student Emergency Fund will provide direct financial support to the students who most need our help. It is important to note every penny of our LBC Emergency Fund goes directly to a student's account. There is not one dollar that is spent elsewhere. Please help ensure our Briggsies have the financial resources to succeed here at MSU.

Your gift will create a lifeline for our most vulnerable students.

“I am so grateful to my home college for looking out for its students. Thank you so much Lyman Briggs College for everything you have done for me”

Lyman Briggs College is a small college where science-minded students are supported in community. One powerful way we can provide this support and sense of community is by providing the funds to help our most vulnerable students to live and learn in this challenging time. Please consider how you can help reduce the financial burden for our Briggsies.
