Lyman Briggs College Student Emergency Fund

Your gift will create a lifeline for our most vulnerable students.

College life can be expensive for students. Inflation and supply chain issues have translated to rising costs across the board, even in higher education. Adding to the cost are unforeseen events that happen in students' lives, which make paying for bills, rent, textbooks, or even food, a challenge.

The Lyman Briggs College Student Emergency Fund was established in 2021 to provide up to $500 of financial support per LBC student, for costs arising from serious, unexpected, and potentially harmful situations requiring immediate action. Examples of such situations include accidents, illness, the death of a family member, fire, natural disaster, need for temporary housing, and loss of wages due to isolation or sick care. Since Fall of 2021, we have awarded over $15,000 in emergency funds.

Gifts to the Lyman Briggs College Student Emergency Fund  support the students who most need our help.

Lyman Briggs College is a small college where science-minded students are supported in community. One way we can offer this support is through providing the funds to help our students to live and learn, creating a brighter future for themselves and their peers.

Together we are stronger. Help a student; make a difference.

“Not only am I possibly facing being evicted from my apartment but also being unenrolled from Michigan State due to having a past-due balance from the past semesters. I currently have no help from anyone in my family, I’m pretty much on my own and trying my best to make things work. The student emergency fund relief would be a great asset to me, and I would use it to my best advantage.”

“I've had to pick up more jobs on campus and dedicate more hours to working instead of studying. I currently have three positions on campus and a lot of my time goes toward these jobs. The money I earn mostly goes towards paying my rent on time and has been an incredible burden to manage. Any funds would help to ease the intense financial issues I'm currently struggling through.”

“I'm worried that if I don't figure out my expenses, I won't be able to keep attending college. I want to go to medical school, which is even more expensive than my undergraduate degree. Any amount helps.”
