Save The Faerie Queene at MSU Libraries

All three volumes of The Faerie QueeneAs the academic heart of campus, the MSU Libraries has become a hub for collaboration and new ideas. Amid the changes and innovations of the new century, many of our invaluable resources in Special Collections have aged and are in need of care through conservation and preservation. MSU Libraries’ Adopt-a-Book project exists to preserve our treasured collections for present and future generations of Spartans researching, teaching, and learning.

By adopting Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, you are helping to preserve one of the most famous works of English literature.

Your Support Will Inspire Others and Leave a Lasting Impact

Your gift will ensure that present and future generations can draw inspiration from our 1897 publication of The Faerie Queene, which not only provides insight to the past through its story, but also embodies the lofty ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Binding damage to the bookThese beautiful books are bound in vellum and suffer what many vellum books do: the covers are warped and the vellum has cracked in the hinges where it has to flex. The process to conserve these three beautiful volumes of The Faerie Queene will be to gently and slowly humidify the covers so they can be flattened without damaging the colorful illustrations. Finally, the cracks and tears along the hinges, both inside and outside of the cover will be repaired with Japanese paper, which is often used to repair vellum bindings. The books will then be put in custom-fitted cloth boxes to keep the books from warping again in the future. The end result will be a book that is once again pristine to look at and functional to read and enjoy.

Your participation makes a difference! The most important action is to show your support by making a gift of any size. Then, ask your friends, students, and fellow Spartans to join you in supporting this project. Take your love of knowledge and literature viral, and help MSU Libraries preserve these important resources from our collection for many years to come!

Project Budget

Community partners play a vital role in the preservation of rare materials through financial support and awareness for vital projects. With your support, we can return this enchanting work into circulation within Special Collections.

Our $3,500 goal directly covers the conservation process for all three volumes. This includes all the supplies to repair the damaged covers, strengthening the vellum bindings, and creating custom-fitted cloth boxes to protect the books long into the future.

Who We Are

The project will be completed by the MSU Libraries Conservation Unit. The unit exists to maintain and repair circulating collections. Additionally, it is equipped to handle more complex treatments from Special Collections and other departments with old and rare or unusual volumes.
