Help Support JCMU Students!
JCMU Melville Memorial Scholarship Fund

Since 1988, the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) has transformed the lives of thousands of young people and inspired greater collaboration between the United States and Japan. Born of a desire to build and strengthen relationships between Japanese, Americans, and people of every nationality, JCMU’s programs give students the opportunity to study language and culture on the shore of Lake Biwa while participating in the decades-long sister state relationship between Michigan and Shiga.

Over the decades, JCMU has worked to remain affordable for students of every background, regardless of training or experience, while providing access to a diverse selection of academic and intercultural activities. JCMU has navigated challenging times - incredible life-changing earthquakes, international public health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic - and come out stronger than ever. Community support has helped JCMU stay vibrant and open to students despite these challenges.

As we look to the future, we are poised to do so much more. Your financial support is vital to helping JCMU uphold our core values of affordability, accessibility, and high-quality academics in an international, multi-cultural context.

Make your gift – and make a difference at JCMU – today!

Established in 2008 during JCMU’s 20th anniversary celebration, the JCMU Melville Memorial Scholarship Endowment honors the memory and contributions of Professor Harold Melville (1945-2008). Professor Melville served as on the faculty of JCMU’s partner institution in Japan, Shiga University, as well as visiting lecturer at JCMU-Hikone during the 1990s and early 2000s. He is survived by his wife, JCMU Japanese Language Instructor Mrs. Keiko Melville, children, and grandchildren.

This endowment provides critical scholarship support for eligible students from Michigan’s 15 public universities to participate in study abroad programs at JCMU-Hikone, especially for short courses and summer institutes, for which traditional financial aid opportunities are limited.

Who We Are

Founded on the 20th anniversary of the Michigan-Shiga sister-state relationship, the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) is a unique intercultural organization that hosts study abroad programs to build and strengthen relationships between Japanese, American, and people of every nationality. JCMU’s programs give students the opportunity to study Japanese language and culture on the shore of Lake Biwa while participating in the community of the City of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, where the living/learning center is located.

JCMU is committed to providing affordable study abroad programs that allow students to create meaningful intercultural experiences while participating in academic studies of the highest caliber. JCMU strives to be accessible for students of every background, regardless of training or experience, while providing a diverse selection of academic and intercultural activities. Participants from colleges and universities in Michigan and across the world are welcome at JCMU.
