Institute of Water Research at MSU

Image of IWR staff working in the field.Clean water is essential for drinking, recreating, and developing a healthy Great Lakes economy. The Institute of Water Research (IWR) at Michigan State University is dedicated to developing science-based technology, research, educational programs, and partnerships to help understand and address critical water issues to keep our water clean. Our institute looks for ways to get students involved in real world problems and have them work as a team to provide solutions to those problems.

Your support will provide funds to get students connected to these projects. Some examples of the research projects currently underway at the IWR include:

  • Effectiveness of Constructed Wetlands with Floating Plants in Removing Nutrients from Tile Drain: Through the use of a wetland treatment system, this project will help improve the water quality and health of the River Raisin and Western Lake Erie Basin by reducing phosphorus leaving tile drains and entering tributaries to Lake Erie.
  • The Clinton Sensor Project: A multi-phased Clinton River Sensor Project is creating an ecologically based approach for effectively and equitably managing lakes and streams in the Great Lakes Region in response to the effects of urbanization and climate change.
  • Accelerating Nutrient Management Adoption in the Saginaw Watershed: IWR will develop and implement a program to increase adoption of nutrient management practices on roughly 20,000 acres of farmland in the Saginaw River watershed. This work aims to improve water quality, as well as decrease nutrient runoff in the water by working through a network of farmers in the watershed.
  • Improving Water Quality in SE Michigan Rivers and Streams through Strategic Monitoring: In partnership with state and federal agencies, IWR will develop a monitoring strategy to measure progress towards meeting the State of Michigan’s goal to reduce phosphorus in Lake Erie by 40%. Students will install equipment and collect data to support conservation initiatives, resulting in improved tracking toward cleaner waterways feeding into the Great Lakes.

Give to the Institute of Water Research at Michigan State University and help fund vital research to keep your local rivers, streams and the Great Lakes clean and healthy for future generations. The money generated from this fundraiser will go towards supporting student interns, providing hands-on learning experience, and professional skillsets.
