The Girls on outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science (GALS) at MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station (KBS)
Too few women, especially those from minority and low-income backgrounds, pursue careers in STEM due to a lack of access and support. GALS breaks these barriers by combining hands-on science learning with outdoor adventure, creating a space where students build confidence and see themselves as scientists.
Your Support Will Make a Big Difference
GALS is a two-week summer program where high school students backpack through the wilderness, learning ecology, earth science and chemistry alongside scientists. The wilderness serves as both a classroom and a place for personal growth, where participants develop leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills. GALS helps students see themselves as scientists and leaders, breaking down barriers that have historically kept women and minorities out of STEM fields.
Will you join us with a gift to support GALS at KBS?
Donations cover essential costs like food, gear, transportation and instructor support, providing students with life-changing experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence and inspire future careers in STEM.
Your support helps launch and sustain GALS at MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station, equipping students—especially those who identify as female or gender nonconforming, students of color, and those from rural or low-income backgrounds—with the confidence and experience to pursue STEM careers. Keeping GALS free and accessible ensures that every participant can focus on learning and growing without financial barriers.
Together, we can foster the next generation of diverse environmental leaders and create a more inclusive scientific community for years to come.
Who We Are
GALS was founded in 2016 by four female Ph.D. students in the Biology and Ecology programs at Duke University. The GALS program is offered at the University of Arizona, New Mexico, UC Davis and North Carolina State. 2025 will be the inaugural year for GALS by Michigan State University at MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station.
