MSU Community Engagement Scholars Program

In 2016 the Center for Community Engaged Learning and the MSU Office of President have founded the MSU Community Engagement Scholars Program (CESP).  The program has continuously offered community engagement scholar opportunities to undergraduate students at all levels and across all majors and programs.  Each year 10-15 students are selected for this program which places student scholars with community partners in Flint, Detroit, and Lansing.  All partners are focused on community and/or economic development.  In addition to their service with community partners, the scholars are part of a cohort. The MSU CESP cohort meets monthly to learn about teambuilding, leadership, DEI, and much more.  This program provides students and community organizations with the opportunity to partner for at least one full academic year.  These long-lasting relationships help to address community identified projects, build networks, and contribute to healthy and vibrant communities.   There is a great need for additional placements in all partner communities and to expand the program to other areas in the state including Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. Funding for additional 10 more scholar placements could expand the reach of this program significantly.

Give to the MSU Community Engagement Scholars Program and Help fund additional scholar opportunities in Flint, Lansing, Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids.  $5,000 funds one scholar for a full academic year.

This project partners student scholars with partners to address important community projects.  Past scholars have been placed at the City of Detroit working on the Detroit Alternative ID Program and Homeownership Programs, the City of Lansing working with planning units and the Love Lansing community-building program, as well as the CRIM Fitness Foundation in Flint, MI, and the United Way and Refugee Development Center in Lansing.
