MSU’s Collegiate Recovery Community: Sponsor a Student in Recovery
The Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) serves students in or seeking recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. MSU’s data supports the need for expanding recovery services, with 3.2% of Spartans reporting that they identify as being in recovery - which equates to an estimated 1,600 students who may need recovery supports. The CRC’s mission is to provide a safe and supportive campus community in which students in recovery can successfully achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals.
"The CRC has saved my life and improved it in countless ways. The support has allowed me to thrive academically & socially in ways I never thought were possible."
Your Support Will Make a Big Difference
Financial support is particularly important for students in recovery to successfully engage in college as many have used college savings to pay for the cost of treatment, are no longer eligible for federal financial aid, or have other financial responsibilities that stand as barriers to affording higher education. CRC members need your support to help meet the financial demands of being a student in recovery working to overcome these impediments to their academic goals. With your help, Spartans in recovery will be able to apply for up to $500 per semester to cover essential health, wellness, academic, and living expenses such as the following:
- $500 = First month rent for a student returning to college after completing a treatment program
- $400 = Semester of tutoring
- $200 = Purchase a bike for transportation, exercise, and stress coping tool
- $100 = Groceries to get a student by until pay day
- $65 = Grad program application fee
- $35 = Gas to travel to jobs and recovery support meetings
- $30 = Student membership in the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE)
- $20 = Insurance co-pay so a student can access a needed medication
- $15 = Participate in weekend sober activities with SOAR (Spartans’ Organization for All Recovery), MSU’s registered student organization for Spartans in recovery and their allies
96% of MSU students approve of their peers choosing not to drink any alcohol at all (Data source: 2024 MSU U Celebrate Survey, N=786)
