MSU Baja Racing Team

The MSU Baja Racing Team is a dedicated group of 68 engineering students who design, build and race an off-road vehicle in two official Baja SAE competitions and one off-season event each year. These competitions push students to apply engineering principles, creativity and problem-solving skills to develop a high-performance vehicle capable of tackling extreme off-road terrain.

Competing against teams from universities around the world, our students showcase their vehicle’s design, durability and performance in rigorous challenges. Baja SAE is more than just a competition—it’s a hands-on, team-based engineering experience that cultivates expertise in vehicle design, manufacturing and project management. The program equips students with the technical knowledge and real-world skills needed to excel in the automotive and engineering industries, preparing them to be leaders in their field.

Improve Learning for Future Engineers

Since 1979, the MSU Baja Racing Team has been shaping the next generation of engineers by providing hands-on experience in design, fabrication and project management. This initiative allows students to move beyond textbook theories, applying their knowledge to construct and refine a high-performance off-road vehicle built for competition.

Through this project, students develop critical problem-solving skills, master industry-relevant tools and gain practical insights into engineering and manufacturing processes. By supporting our team, you are directly contributing to the education of future innovators, equipping them with the expertise and confidence to excel in their careers from day one.

Project Budget

The funds raised will be used to help pay for items we cannot be supplied with from donations. From high level expenses such as competition travel costs and fees that add up to over $12,000 per year, to smaller expenses such as repairing our aging 3D printer setup (~$500).

These costs add up quickly, and every donation—no matter the size—makes a meaningful difference. Your support helps us not only beat U of M but also keep our team free of any student fees, keeping the valuable learning experience open to all. We are incredibly grateful for any contribution you can make!

Who We Are

The Michigan State University Baja Racing Team is a passionate group of 68 students, including 26 hard working leads and 42 motivated general members. Our team is made up of students from a variety of majors, including mechanical, electrical, civil, biosystems and chemical engineering. While we come from different academic backgrounds, we unite with a common goal: designing, building, testing and competing an off-road vehicle.
