Help MSU Air Force ROTC Alumni Preserve the Alumni Memorial Chapel

ROTC ceremony at MSU Alumni Memorial ChapelThe MSU Alumni Memorial Chapel is so much more than a beloved campus landmark, it is an enduring symbol of service and ultimate sacrifice. Opened in 1952 and paid for entirely by alumni of MSU, the Chapel memorializes MSU alumni who died in military service and honors over 6,800 alumni who have served in our nation’s military.

Inside the Chapel is a sign that reads, “These names represent those who died in the armed forces” and the walls are engraved with 589 names and dates. All MSU-affiliated men and women that died during military service have been included in the memorial. While each name represents an individual sacrifice, collectively they tell a story of our shared history. The earliest dates go back to the first graduating class from Michigan Agricultural College (now MSU) in 1861 when commencement ceremonies were canceled because the entire senior class left to join the Union Army in the Civil War. The latest names were added in 2005.

Over the years the chapel has weathered and deteriorated as with any historical building. Funds for historic preservation can be difficult to raise; therefore, it is imperative that Spartans come together as a community to support the restoration of this important landmark honoring our fellow Spartans’ bravery and lives. The next most critical need is the restoration, preservation and protection of the 38 historical stained glass windows in the chapel that document the history of MSU.

Thanks to a lead gift from MSU alumnus and Air Force veteran Jeremy Blaney, as well generous donations from fellow MSU Air Force ROTC, Detachment 380 alumni, funds are being raised to fully restore a widow inside the Chapel honoring Patriotism. Donations will be used install clear protective outer shield to prevent any exterior damage to the window as well as fully restore faded colors and ensure that the window is weatherized and energy efficient.

Join with the MSU community and honor the legacy of service of all fallen Spartan Veterans by supporting the preservation of the Alumni Memorial Chapel today. A special donor commemoration will be installed in the chapel to celebrate the donors who make a gift to this project and wish to have their name recognized, as well as the collective support from alumni of the Air Force ROTC program at MSU, Detachment 380.
