Spartans Give Back in More Ways Than One

The MSU community supports local communities on Global Day of Service, April 17.

Spartans always find a way to give back. It is part of being a Spartan, supporting communities around you—whether it is the MSU community in East Lansing or local communities around the world. From making donations to volunteering, it is simply what Spartans do.

Margie Bauman, a 1965 Communications Arts and Sciences graduate, participates in the Global Day of Service from Anchorage, Alaska. She loves getting together with alumni to help the community in Anchorange and beyond. “And of course,” she says, “to wear MSU T-shirts and hoodies!”

Bauman, like many Spartans, says it is important to give back even more so during a global pandemic. “Let’s keep spreading that Spartan spirit,” she says.

On April 17, Spartans all over the world will participate in the Global Day of Service to harness the power of service and demonstrate what Spartans can do in a single day.

Like last year, the Global Day of Service will look a little different because of the coronavirus. We are asking Spartans worldwide to make an extra effort to serve MSU and their communities while following social distancing recommendations and guidelines set by respective authorities.

MSU has participated in the Global Day of Service since 2013. Even amid a pandemic, Spartans have showed that giving back is of utmost importance. While we are looking forward to being able to do more in-person service in 2022 and later, we are excited to see what Spartans come up with this year.

If you are looking for ways to participate, the Center for Community Engaged Learning at MSU provides an expansive list of ways to aide local communities and more—from the safety and comfort of home, of course. From sharing sidewalk chalk art, to writing thank you notes to health care workers or the elderly, everyone can make a difference.
