Give Green Day 2022 Raises More than $1.34 Million to Support Students

On Tuesday, March 15, Michigan State University’s sixth #GiveGreenDay campaign raised more than $1.34 million to support students and community initiatives, thanks to more than 7,050 gifts from donors around the world.

Gifts originated from 48 states in the U.S., and 16 countries. The first gift was made at exactly 12:00:01 a.m., and the last gift was made at 11:59:45.

Throughout the day and night, alumni clubs worldwide as well as university faculty, staff and students connected with Spartans to spread the word about dozens of crowdfunding projects, and each of MSU’s colleges encouraged support for important initiatives and needs.

Twenty-three projects exceeded their fundraising goals—some doubling and tripling their goals—and even projects that came up shy of their target raised thousands of dollars.

MSU Alumni Clubs raised more than $183,000 for scholarships that support current and future Spartans from each club’s regions. Five colleges raised money for their emergency funds, which can provide immediate financial help to students experiencing unforeseen challenges. Notably, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources raised more than $19,000 for its Whole Student Success Fund, which helps bridge gaps in housing and food security, technology needs, and emotional support for at-risk students—to ensure that they have the tools they need to be successful in school, and in life.

And, the College of Natural Science nearly doubled their goal of raising $7,500 for Dean’s Research Scholars program, pulling in more than $14,200 to support the exemplary students who share their research and classroom experiences as ambassadors for the college.

Of the more than 7,050 gifts, more than 65 percent came from alumni and nearly 14 percent were made by university faculty and staff, including MSU’s own President Samuel L. Stanley and his spouse Dr. Ellen Li.
