Michigan Natural Features Inventory - Wildlife Acoustic Recording Units Project

Cataloging Michigan’s rare and unique bird species is no easy task. Scientists at the Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) are dedicated to protecting Michigan biodiversity, but additional funds are needed to help us acquire the technological tools needed to enhance our work.

The MNFI is raising funds to purchase four wildlife acoustics recording units to help with our traditional marsh bird surveys. With recent technological advances, it is now more feasible to estimate the locations of bird detections through a process called hyperbolic localization. By approximating bird locations, we can then estimate bird densities as would be done with traditional surveys, thus saving time and resources.

Give to MNFI and help us purchase four wildlife acoustic recording units to us better study, map, and protect rare bird species in Michigan!

Donations would be used to help us reach our goal of raising the $4,000 needed to purchase four wildlife acoustics recording units so we can begin estimating the position of a rare bird species and testing our methodology in 2021. Your support will help us launch a pilot study with these four new units which will help us possibly improve and expand our work in the future.

Who We Are

Since 1980 the MNFI has been working to guide the conservation of Michigan's biodiversity by providing the highest quality scientific expertise and information to our partners. MNFI’s group of scientists study a diversity of systems and species in Michigan.
