Help Honor Christopher P. Long’s Contributions to MSU

The College of Arts & Letters and the Honors College invite your support to fund a commemorative tree celebrating Dean Christopher P. Long’s contributions to MSU. His visionary leadership and culture of care have laid the foundation for enduring success, inspiring future generations of Spartan students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

In June 2024, Chris will transition to a new role as Provost and Senior Vice President at the University of Oregon.

Why a tree?

Since becoming Dean in 2015, Chris has developed a profound connection to campus and its emblematic trees. His office is situated in Linton Hall, located at the historic “oak opening” chosen as the site for the Michigan State Agricultural College in 1855.

Chris has also drawn inspiration from a resilient oak outside Linton Hall. The tree remarkably recovered after being severely damaged in a 2016 storm, embodying resilience through adversity.

Help us plant a tribute to Chris's legacy at MSU

Your contribution will support the purchase and planting of a tree in honor of Chris’s dedication to the MSU community. Reflecting his wish for us, inspired by Peter Raible, “May the fires we have lit and the seeds we have planted flourish for generations to come,” this tree will stand as a symbol of Chris’s impactful legacy and ongoing commitment to the values he championed here.

Any funds exceeding the $3,000 target will be allocated to initiatives that Chris has launched within both colleges.
