Michigan State University’s Give Green Day will take place on Nov. 28.

Give Green Day is a 24-hour campaign to engage Spartans and friends across the world in giving back to support students at Michigan State.

David Moehring, a 1960 alumnus from California, has made a $50,000 challenge gift to kick off this year’s effort, which has a goal of raising $250,000. His gift will be doled out throughout the day to encourage participation by matching gifts in giving challenges and as bonus money for projects that meet their fundraising goal.

“I owe a lot to this university,” said Moehring. “I met my bride here many years ago and started out here on my career in medicine. I am so grateful for what this university has done for me.”

There are 28 projects and programs seeking between $2,500 and $25,000. Participating are all of MSU’s 18 colleges, in addition to Spartan Fund, the 4-H Foundation, the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, both campus museums, the MSU Libraries and WKAR.

Additionally, more than 60 alumni clubs will ask their members and friends to support club initiatives and scholarship funds.

Gifts to any of these causes will go right to work impacting the lives of MSU students and members of the larger MSU community.

MSU will harness the power of social media and word-of-mouth to spread the word. To date, more than 150 individuals have been recruited to Team Green to help advocate for support through their social networks.

In 2016, nearly 2,000 donors made a gift to MSU on Give Green Day, resulting in $241,939 raised – surpassing the goal of $100,000.

The day takes advantage of the timing of Giving Tuesday, a global day of philanthropy, following Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
