The faculty and staff of the College of Human Medicine have a strong tradition of supporting the College through personal financial giving. It is something in which we can take pride, and I want to thank each of you who have made commitments to us in the past.
Of course there many worthy targets for philanthropy in the College, but one upon which I think we can all agree is student support. We are a College that has always maintained a clear focus on undergraduate medical education. Our mission, program, and faculty are compelling to students but we need to do all we can to ensure that the best of our applicants have the opportunity to choose our College.
To this end, I would like to invite you to join with me to create the first full scholarship in the history of the College of Human Medicine. Below you can find the criteria we will use to award this scholarship.
I am pledging to match personally every dollar you give to the CHM Faculty/Staff Expendable Scholarship up to a total of $10,000.
Furthermore, I pledge to offer this match for 4 years in order to ensure that we can promise the student who receives the scholarship this full level of funding for all of medical school.
I am confident that we will raise enough money to more than cover increases in tuition over this 4-year period. If indeed we do raise more than we need for any given year, we will use the excess for additional scholarship support.
I want to be very clear with you that it is not my intention to cause anyone to redirect giving from other College of Human Medicine funds. My hope is that our clear need to compete for the best students will cause those of you who already support CHM to give more, and for those of you who do yet give, to start.
I sincerely hope you will consider a four-year pledge to support the first full scholarship for a CHM student. Please contact Doug Moffat at the College Development Office if you have questions about how to give, or either of us if you have questions about this initiative itself. Doug's number is 517-353-5153. His email is moffat@msu.edu.
Thank you very much,
Marsha D. Rappley, M.D.
Dean
