The MSU Counseling Center

The Counseling Center supports student success through multiple vehicles:
- preventive education programs provided across the community
- outreach to students
- direct group and individual personal and career counseling
- community intervention
- grief or anxiety management during crisis events
- consultation and programming to faculty and staff facilitating their work with students
The Counseling Center supports the academic goals of the university and the counseling professions through its training programs.
- The training programs include a year long, American Psychological Association (APA) approved predoctoral psychology internship which attracts diverse national and international students from programs across the country, and practicum training for Michigan State University clinical and counseling psych students. Our diversifying training currently has 4 chief foci: interpersonal/psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, multicultural/multiple diversity/multiple "ways of knowing" and outreach theory and practice.

The Counseling Center has special programs and focus areas:
- MECCA (Multi-ethnic Counseling Center Alliance). The MECCA staff have diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and experience in provided services to all students and a special expertise in service to multicultural-racial and international students.
- Testing Office The Testing Office provides computer and paper national exams such as GRE, GMAT, LSAT, as well as testing and information on many other standardized exams, makeup orientation tests, Distance Learning exams, and psychological and career tests ordered by the counseling staff.
- LBGT The Counseling Center is a Safe Space. Providing non-judgmental, non-directive assistance to lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgendered students.
- Substance Abuse Recovery Counseling Center counselors identify issues relating to the use of alcohol or other drugs and work with student in recovery. Individualize assessments, counseling, referrals, and groups are available.
- Sexual Assault Crisis and Safety Education The Center provides immediate and longer term assistance to those who have been traumatized by a rape or sexual assault. Outreach, education and prevention programs and a 24-hour crisis intervention phone service operated by trained volunteers are offered.
