Honoring Randy Scott,
Comic Art Bibliographer at Michigan State University

Randy Scott, comic book bibliographer, has grown and shaped the Michigan State University Libraries’ Comic Art Collection since its beginning in the 1970s. Now, after 49 years of service, he is retiring to enjoy time with his family, make music and travel.

When Randy began working at MSU, comic books were not acknowledged as appropriate material for scholarly research. However, he recognized their value and prominence in popular culture and worked diligently to ensure that comic books have a home at MSU. During his career, Randy pioneered a methodology for cataloging comics and worked to transform MSU’s collection from less than 5,000 American comics to the largest publicly accessible collection of global comic books and art in the United States with over 350,000 items. Randy saw the value of comic art in academia and spent his life curating and advocating for research in this field.

Celebrate Randy Scott’s Successful Career with a Gift Today!

Show your appreciation for Randy’s work by supporting the Levy Endowment Fund for MSU Libraries' Comic Art Collection in Honor of Randall W. Scott. This fund was created to recognize Randy’s impact and to support the purchase, preservation and curation of comics within the Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections. It ensures that the collection Randy spent his career building and caring for will continue to expand and enrich the life of students and scholars for years to come.

Congratulate Randy on his retirement and help continue to build his vision for comics research at Michigan State!
