FFA: Funding Future Agriscience Program Instructors

You might remember Dr. Don Meaders. He was a Michigan Agriculture Education icon. He was at many Agriculture Education and FFA activities, encouraging our students to accomplish everything. But perhaps his most enduring contribution was his financial commitment to agriculture education. The O. Donald and Martha Meaders Agriculture & Natural Resources Endowment Fund supports student interns in Agricultural Education.

Students often struggle to afford the costs associated with a fifth year of schooling. Your gift will ensure educators receive their Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education (AFNRE) certification and ensure the future of our FFA programs.

Currently, there aren’t enough teachers to fill the open jobs around the country in Agriscience education. More than 400 AFNRE positions were unfilled nationally in our current school year. It’s challenging for recent graduates to choose another year and more debt for their certification when paid positions are beckoning.

Martha Meaders would like to see the fund grow so it can award more scholarships in years to come. In celebration of Don’s life and the 2017 State Convention, Martha will match any contributions given through March 24, up to a total of $10,000. Give today to double your impact!

Students learning from an FFA teacher

The O. Donald and Martha Meaders Agriculture & Natural Resources Endowment Fund supports students in their fifth year of education as a student teacher. This fifth and final year is essential in preparing them to become great agriculture education professionals. It is during this year educators receive their AFNRE certification. This is the vital piece to having an Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education program at any school.

Who We Are

Dr. Meaders understood the necessity of these teachers and the difficulty of funding their certification. He and his wife wanted to ease the burden for students. The Meaders fund has provided scholarships to students in their fifth year of school since 2014.
