The MSU College of Human Medicine pushes the boundaries of how we think about health and its delivery systems within the context of community. The college thrives in a culture of intense curiosity with a focus on the pursuit of practical solutions to the very real needs of individuals and communities. The College of Human Medicine is dedicated to the principle that students learn best when they are immersed in a community to observe and participate in the practice of medicine conducted by faculty and community-based physicians. Through the Empower Extraordinary campaign we seek to raise $100 million to advance the College of Human Medicine. We will advance our faculty through endowed chairs and increased research funding. We will advance our students through an expanded commitment to scholarships. We will invest in our research facilities in order to seek new medical discoveries and advance health in our communities. The College of Human Medicine seeks to raise $99.5 million in the Empower Extraordinary campaign. We will achieve this goal with a mix of endowment and annual funds.
To date we have raised $83.6 million, but more private support is needed to achieve our full potential and propel this great university forward.

The success of our program has resulted in a high quality pool of applicants each year. To encourage students to choose this path, we must offer ways to minimize their debt load. We must invest in opportunities to attract the best and brightest students to study at our college and in our communities throughout Michigan without regard to their ability to pay. The return on this investment comes when they choose to live in these communities as practicing medical doctors. Without these opportunities, the College of Human Medicine will not be sufficiently competitive in quality, diversity, and geography.
Fighting a disease and eventually finding its cure is a long-term proposition with many unsung heroes. For donors passionate about curing or eradicating specific conditions, endowing faculty positions is the highest and best use of their philanthropy. An endowed chair allows us to put a professor on the problem—making a profound commitment to push the envelope on a particular disease and never stop pushing. Endowed faculty positions enable the college to attract and retain the most knowledgeable and accomplished faculty. Endowed chairs are the lifeblood of our academic future.
The College of Human Medicine faculty are researching and developing programs to address pervasive problems in the health of our communities. Through research into Parkinson’s disease and endometrial, breast, and prostate cancers, our scientists come to understand how these diseases devastate lives, and how they might be stopped. In the highly competitive world of academic medicine, research funding and results drive academic reputation which allows us to attract the best students and faculty. More importantly it enables us to fundamentally advance health in our communities.
The College of Human Medicine has an unprecedented opportunity to expand upon our resources to drive biomedical and public health discoveries. The following projects are underway, and naming opportunities exist for each project. The projects include: The Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center, The College of Human Medicine Public Health Initiative in Flint, and the MSU Bio Engineering Facility.
